Modern Retail announces Jill Manoff as new editor-in-chief 

Modern Retail is getting an ambitious new perspective under the leadership of Jill Manoff. 

Building on her success as longtime editor-in-chief of Glossy, a Digiday Media brand covering the business of beauty, wellness, fashion and luxury, Manoff will now also serve as editor-in-chief of Modern Retail. She will oversee the publication’s editorial operations and drive the editorial vision for the Modern Retail Marketing Summit in April while continuing to lead Glossy. 

“Retail no longer has a winning playbook. As brands and retailers navigate the rapidly evolving landscape, they’re carving out original combinations of strategies as they continue to learn from the best,” said Manoff. “Through new editorial series and member products, Modern Retail will offer more access to the operational processes, marketing tactics, sales strategies and leaders proving successful, while providing the honesty and in-depth analysis its readers have come to expect.” 

Manoff’s 20-year reporting and editing career spans consumer publications, retail giants’ marketing divisions and eight years at the helm of Glossy, where she and her team have guided brands through pandemic challenges, supply chain obstacles, the rise of TikTok and fall of the pure-play DTC business model. She will take on the role as Modern Retail’s previous editor-in-chief, Cale Weissman, moves on to other opportunities.

To further support Modern Retail’s mission to explore and explain the changes transforming the retail business with honesty, depth and authority, Modern Retail veteran editor Anna Hensel has been promoted to executive editor. And Glossy’s Tatiana Pile will serve as managing editor of both publications as part of the transition.

“When we launched Modern Retail in 2019, the industry was in the middle of some significant shifts. Fast forward to 2025, and a lot has changed: No one could have predicted the Covid-induced e-commerce bump, and new players like Shein and Temu have emerged,” said Hensel. 

“The retail industry is going to keep changing. But what won’t change is how we cover the reinvention of retail with authority and honesty. With Jill stepping into this new role, we will be working more closely with our sister publication, Glossy, and tapping their expertise in fashion, beauty and wellness.”
